Modular school buildings

What are modular school buildings?

Modular school buildings are an effective, fast and flexible solution to deliver quality learning spaces for schools with growing enrolment needs.

Modular school buildings are delivered through the Modular Classrooms Program. This program was formerly known as the Relocatable Building Program.

The buildings come in different sizes. They can be:

  • single and multistorey general classrooms
  • speciality curriculum classrooms (such as art or science)
  • administration buildings
  • toilets.

These buildings have the same features as traditional school buildings, including:

  • energy efficient design
  • heating and cooling systems, as well as wall insulation
  • ceiling treatments to reduce noise
  • ceiling fans
  • ramps
  • lifts.

By making the modular buildings offsite, there is less disruption to students’ learning.

The buildings are delivered to schools in parts. They are then assembled onsite. This approach gives students and teachers faster access to high-quality learning environments.

Modular buildings can also be moved from one school to another to meet changes in enrolment demand.

If you’re a school principal or staff member looking for more about how modular buildings are assigned to schools, you can read the Department of Education’s Management of Modular Classrooms and Facilities policy.
